Zaris was born and grew up deep in the twilight realm of the Feywild in the city of Helluwathas also known as “The Autumn City”. Nearly all Eladrin show a propensity for the arcane arts, but Zaris was a step or two above them. Recognizing his potential, he was chosen for more formal training as a wizard.
Zaris was an excellent student and had an unquenchable thirst for knowledge. But he didn’t just blindly accept their teachings as proven facts. And an answer like, “That’s just the way it is.” was never a good enough reason for him. He would run small experiments or do his own research to confirm what they taught. Some of the teachers liked this attitude and said it was the mark of a true scholar. Other teachers took it as an insult.
It wasn’t really a problem until later in his education. There were certain lores that were strictly forbidden and Zaris just didn’t understand why. Different teachers gave different reasons: “It’s just forbidden”, “The knowledge of it will corrupt your mind”, “Nothing good can come of it”, etc. But Zaris didn’t accept any of these answers.
He’d come up with scenarios where these “evil” magics could be used for good deeds. Such as animating skeletons to save a town by attacking the invaders or having the skeletons dig an irrigation ditch. This line of thinking greatly worried his teachers and they started watching him more closely. As they suspected, Zaris started taking an interest in necrotic magics, and was interested in books that broached the subject of the darker areas of magic, but none of the books actually “crossed the line” so-to-speak.
However, Zaris crossed the line on his own with some of his research and experiments. He used plant and animal life to test extended exposures to necrotic energies to judge its effects. Both withered and became sickly. He attempted to isolate the “evil” but could not. But Zaris wouldn’t give up so easily. Researching in the apprentice’s library simply didn’t have the knowledge he required, so he bypassed some wards and went into the more restricted areas. However, he didn’t bypass all of them and a silent alarm was triggered notifying the Keepers.
Zaris thought he had gotten away with it when he left the library with a sleek black bound book titled, Necromancy: An Objective Study of Death Magics. But the authorities were just giving him enough rope to hang himself with. They caught up with him when he was back in his private lab pouring over a novel about the dark arts surrounded by woodland creatures in a sickly or dying state.
When brought before the Council of Seven to answer for his crimes, Zaris tried to explain but they would not listen. In fact, Zaris was given little chance to speak at all. When asked if he regretted what he had done, Zaris replied, “No, of course not.” This was one of the few times Zaris spoke without thinking. He wasn’t even given a chance to explain his answer.
His offense was not taken lightly and Zaris was expelled from the school and exiled from Helluwathas for his transgressions. (The most serious of punishments for an Eladrin). His family, friends, and state all turned their back on him and he was forced to brave the Feywild with little more than the clothes on his back and sword on his hip.
Zaris eventually made it out of the Feywilds and into the wilderness of the real world. Using his magic and intellect he was able to survive with little trouble. Eventually he made it to what the humans referred to as “civilization”. He made a small amount of coin as a scholar, scribe, and apothecary, but the work was sporadic and not very challenging. He traveled around human lands and settled down for a time in Trindale, a small city.
Two of the main features of Trindale that interested Zaris was a decently sized library, and a small mage tower.
